Job Description

Why this role is exciting

  • Be a crucial patient advocate from first contact through recovery. You’ll guide patients and families through their entire surgical journey, ensuring they understand their care plan and feel confident every step of the way.
  • Make a measurable difference. By streamlining preoperative optimization and timely scheduling, you’ll directly reduce delays and improve outcomes for orthopaedic patients.
  • Work at the center of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team that includes surgeons, advanced practice providers, anesthesiology, physical therapy, and care coordinators. Your communication skills and clinical judgment will ensure seamless handoffs and coordinated care.
  • Use and grow your clinical expertise. You will perform focused chart reviews, triage pre- and postoperative nursing needs, and educate patients through both one-on-one coaching and structured orthopaedic education classes.
  • Lead patient education and empowerment. You’ll teach the ortho education class, create individualized teaching moments, and support patients through recovery and follow-up.
  • Thrive in a program with Johns Hopkins’ commitment to innovation, evidence-based practice, and continuous quality improvement.

What you’ll do

  • Conduct timely chart reviews to identify medical and social needs; partner with providers to obtain necessary clearances.
  • Make the initial outreach to patients and families, building rapport and establishing expectations for the surgical pathway.
  • Coordinate and optimize the preoperative workflow to ensure patients are medically prepared and scheduled efficiently for the OR.
  • Provide skilled preop/postop nursing, triage, and ongoing education to promote safe, successful recoveries.
  • Teach and manage orthopaedic education classes that prepare patients for surgery and rehabilitation.
  • Maintain consistent, clear communication with the multidisciplinary orthopaedics team to keep the patient’s plan on track.

Shift: Monday-Friday, 8-hour days - no weekends and paid holidays off

If you are a compassionate, organized, and proactive nurse who loves coordinating care and educating patients, this is your opportunity to shape care pathways at one of the nation’s leading orthopaedic programs. Apply to be part of the Johns Hopkins team and help patients move better, recover faster, and live fuller lives.

Qualifications

  • BSN required; MSN preferred.
  • Recent nursing experience, with orthopaedic navigation, educator or perioperative nursing preferred (approximately 5 years).
  • Active MD or compact RN license at time of hire.

Salary Range: Minimum 51.22/hour - Maximum 79.39/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
